URBAN TRANSPORTATION PLANNING AND MODELLING

(Kentsel Ulaşım Planlaması ve Modelleri)

The main reason for writing this book is the lack of Turkish publications on transportation planning and modelling. Yet, one of the most significant issues in our country is transportation and its consequences, such as environmental pollution, global warming, time losses, and fatalities, injuries and economic costs caused by traffic accidents. The majority of these problems occur in urban areas. Considering that nearly 70% of the world’s population is expected to live in cities by the 2050s, it is inevitable that these problems will become even more serious unless effective measures are taken.

This book covers the historical development of transportation infrastructure and urban transportation planning, provides examples from Turkish and international cities and their transportation plans, explains how scientifically sound transportation plans should be developed together with land-use plans, and presents the essential information required for establishing transportation models. In addition, the book discusses new trends in transportation planning and introduces research and data collection methods that support transportation planning studies.

The book can be used as a textbook for undergraduate and graduate courses at universities offering Turkish-language instruction. Furthermore, it can serve as a reference for transportation planning studies currently being carried out in many Turkish cities, for municipalities and institutions participating in short training programs on transportation planning, and for consulting firms involved in planning processes. The book will be beneficial both theoretically and practically.

Dr. Gökmen Ergun is a Professor in the Department of Civil Engineering at Boğaziçi University, from which he is now retired; however, he continues to teach part-time at the same institution. He received his bachelor’s degree in civil engineering and his master’s degree in soil mechanics from the Middle East Technical University (METU). He later earned his second master’s and doctoral degrees in transportation from Northwestern University (Evanston, Illinois, USA), Department of Civil Engineering.
